Ventral or abdominal hernias may occur when the intestine pushes through a weakened area in the abdominal wall. These result from previous surgical incisions; they are also referred to as incisional hernias. These hernias can occur wherever open or laparoscopic surgery was performed.
Any one of these hernias may be recurrent. This means that a previously repaired hernia has returned. People with weak abdominal walls or multiple surgical sites may simultaneously suffer from a combination of hernia types.
